Check raising in poker is more of a tactic, rather than a rule in poker, but in the past, check-raising was not allowed in certain poker rooms as it was thought to be dishonorable, because of it's inherent "trickiness" to it. "I mean if you're gonna bet, then just bet right? Don't wait for somebody else to bet, and then raise it again." Or so that is how some players thought of the tactic to be against the rules.

Well in modern day poker, check-raising is used all the time with little or no regrets by the players taking advantage of such an opportunity. In this video, the check raise is explained, and showed in several examples of how and when to use it in online poker.
