Traditionally, before hold'em became the most popular poker game, there was a draw poker and stud poker. Those games are still played of course, but Texas hold'em, and Omaha poker comprise the vast majority of poker games these days. But that doesn't take away from the common elements all poker games have.
Poker is a game where the players involved bet into a community pot in a certain sequence whereby, the winner of the pot either shows down the best five card poker hand or forces all of the players out of the pot by betting. In fact, poker is often referred to as a betting game - being not so reliant on the value of your cards as compared to the value of your bet. Depending on the poker game that you're playing, you can have from one to 10 opponents at a table, and any number of them can be involved in a particular hand. The game of poker is played with a 52 card deck, and no suit ranks above another suit. In other words, the eight of hearts is equal value to the eight of diamonds. No matter what poker game you're playing the strength of your hand can only be measured in the end result is a five card poker hand. The five card poker hands are ranked as such from lowest to highest: high card, one pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, and the straight flush. In all poker games there is a forced pot for every hand based on antes, and/or blinds. In having a forced pot, there is more likely to be contention for the pot in every hand. Most official, casino, or any type of organized poker game used poker chips, instead of real money at the table. Poker chips make for easier counting and money management, and pot disbursements at the end of the hand. The object of the game of poker, is to leave with more money than whence you came with. In order to do that you need to win a sufficient amount of pots by either showing the best hand, or bluffing your opponents out of hand by getting them to fold. Now those are the basic rules and object of the game, which on the surface seem quite simple. However as any poker player going to tell you, poker is a game that is anything but simple.
